Fluxus Box

Fluxus Box  “Pinhead”  masking tape, acrylic paint, spray paint, foam board, model magic, blue LED lights, nails Height: 15” Length: 15” Width: 15” Artist Statement: This box was inspired by the movie “Hellraiser”. I took inspiration from the color pallet, gore aesthetics, and structural aspects of the movie. The color pallet is my favorite part of the piece because it plays off the over-saturated complementary blue and orange colors. The shape being a perfect square is symbolic of the movie’s cube that summons another dimension.  Research: Geoffrey Hendrick’s “Sky Box” I took inspiration from this artist from the Fluxus Box Artist blog section because of his use of that deeply saturated blue color contrasted by the dark orange wooden appearance of the container.  http://www.lenkaclayton.com/ This Fluxus Box is from another artist, Lenka Clayton, off the blog that I really vibed with. I enjoyed her color selection as well a...

Memento

Memento “Blue Bird” balsa wood, blue acrylic paint, blue feathers Height: 2 1/2” Length: 6” Width: 2 3/4” Artist Statement: This piece was created as tribute to a friend of mine who passed away two years ago. I remember he had the biggest and brightest blue eyes and that inspired me to choose the monochromatic color scheme for my sculpture. It’s entirely morbid, but the box is constructed so that it appears to resemble the shape of a rectangular coffin. I used the feathers to symbolize him as a blue bird escaping to another place free and at peace.  Research:  http://socks-studio.com/2014/12/08/i-grew-up-here-but-i-never-felt-entirely-part-of-it-marco-tirellis-tiny-sculptures/ I was inspired by this artist, Marco Tirelli, who was posted on the momento blog artist section. His work inspired me because of his minamalistic ability to convey space.  http://foundations3ddesign.blogspot.com/2016/05/sarah-sommer-student-work.html?m=0 ...

On Longing

Sentence 5: “The place of orgin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated.”  This post on my Instagram is of an abandon dock back at my home in Palm Harbor, FL. I used to go to that dock all the time to sit and listen to music. Sometimes my friends would even go with me and we’d just sit there and talk. I wish I could go back there as frequently as I do, I truly miss it.   Sentence 4: “Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss.” I took this statement very literally. This is a picture I took and posted on my Facebook of my dear friend Cameron. He died last year unexpectedily. This picture gives me an odd and unsettling feeling of nostalgia, and a time and place I can never return to.  Sentence 2: “The souvenir reduces the public, the monumentous, the three dimensional, into the miniature that which can be enveloped by the body.”  I found this picture of a Polaroid on my Instagram. It’s in and of itself a souvenir of a whole time i...

Touch Assignment

Pain "People have always mutilated their skins, often enduring pain to be beautiful, as if the pain chastened the beauty, gave it the special veneer of sacrifice."  I chose to draw a girl from the Kayan village located in Thailand. She accurately depicts the pain a person would gladly endure to be considered beautiful in their own culture; for the people of Kayan, binding girls necks with brass coils makes their necks appear longer. Over time the number of coils is increased and the woman's shoulder blades are forced downward.  The Point of Pain "Pain was dished out by vengeful gods, or was the result of falling out of harmony with nature." The picture I drew depicts Eve from the Bible holding an apple to her lips. We're all most likely familiar with the story of Adam and Eve and what becomes of Eve when she eats the forbidden fruit. This story is an example of how culturally we show pain. But in the background of my piece I added brain ...
